For the opening night of Studio 54 in 1977, Antonio Lopez and Juan Ramos designed these costumes to be worn by AILEY dancers. In conjunction with our Edges of Ailey exhibition, we spoke with artist and President of the Antonio Archives, Paul Caranicas, who describes the costumes as "street fashion but before its time." The costumes featured in the photographs and sketches were designed specifically for the opening night of Studio 54 in 1977.

'Edges of Ailey', the current exhibition on the Whitney Museum's fifth floor, closes on February 9th, 2025. The exhibition celebrates the life, dances, influences, and enduring legacy of visionary artist and choreographer Alvin Ailey through visual art, live performance, music, archival materials, and a multi-screen video installation.
