His teachers and supporters were Sandra Fortune Green and Lynn Welters.

Jones spent three summers studying at the School of American Ballet (where he was classmates with Shawn Landers, Cedric Rouse, and Albert Evans) and also trained at the Washington School of Ballet.

After working as an apprentice at Pacific Northwest Ballet from 1989 to 1990, Jones joined Feld Ballet, with which he toured Switzerland and Scandinavia. The following year, he danced with Washington Ballet, performing pieces by Choo San Goh, George Balanchine, Paul Taylor, and Fernand Nault as well as a lead role in Carmina Burana at the Kennedy Center Opera House.

With Béjart Ballet Lausanne, where he was a member from 1992 to 1994, Jones performed notable Béjart works such as The Rite of Spring, Firebird, and The Ring.

In the mid-1990s, he danced with Atlanta Ballet and at the Moulin Rouge in France before joining the Joffrey Ballet in 1996. With the Joffrey, Jones’ repertoire included Gerald Arpino’s Foot Notes for Robert Joffrey, Light Rain, and Round of Angels; David Parsons’ Caught; and Kurt Jooss’ The Green Table as well as pieces by Ann Reinking, Laura Dean, and Margo Sappington.
